Fat Loss Myths – 4 Myths you Need to Know About

DietLoss » 03 June 2009 » In Weight Loss » No Comments

It seems that for every fat loss fact that exists out there, there is a fat loss myth to counteract it. There’s no question that people are looking for a shortcut to losing fat and getting in shape and sometimes they are all too willing to believe things that simply aren’t true. These myths are pushed by weight loss gurus and fitness magazines often to try to help sell products or simply to generate interest. The problem is if you are someone who has ever believed one of these myths or still do currently they can undermine your fat loss success and leave you disappointed and disillusioned.

Here we’re going to take a look at four commonly held fat loss myths:

Spot reduction-spot reduction is a fat loss myth that we still commonly hear about all the time. When someone has a commercial for a particular product to help you tone and tighten your abs and they use examples of people who have used their products and flattened their belly they’re basically propagating this myth. While doing crunches can build muscles in your abdominals, it cannot help you lose fat in that area. To lose fat you have to lose it all over your body and there is no exercise that can allow you to lose fat from one part of the body versus another.

High rep weightlifting-this is another one that we hear about all the time, low reps for muscle, high reps for fat loss. Fat loss can occur with extended aerobic exercise and a sustained heart rate for 40 or more minutes. If you do arm curls for 40 minutes in a row then yes you might lose some fat. You might also lose the ability to use your arms for about a week. The high reps these people are usually talking about are in the 15 to 20 range and when considering the normal range for building muscle is about 8 to 12 you can see that these few extra reps will not do anything to burn fat. Low rep heavy weight sets that build muscle actually do more to burn fat over the long-term because the increased muscle on your body will help to speed up your metabolism.

Working out on an empty stomach-we’ve all heard that in order to lose fat you must get up first thing in the morning and work out on empty stomach. While it may be true to some degree that without the presence of a ready supply of recently digested food your body may choose to metabolize fat stores for energy, the reality is if you haven’t eaten recently your workout will suffer and your energy will be so depleted it is unlikely you will be able to perform at a high enough level to achieve your results.

Drinking cold water-some have touted drinking cold water as a proven fat loss tip. This one is just laughable. It is wise to get plenty of water into your system throughout the day and a commonly held rule of thumb of eight glasses could certainly be helpful to your overall metabolism but the temperature of the water would not matter one bit. Once the liquid hits your stomach weather it was room temperature or ice cold your body will normalize and regulate the temperature in about 30 seconds or so.

Be sure to use common sense and a good bit of research whenever you hear about a new tip for fat loss that seems a bit too good to be true. There are so many myths out there that it can be hard to tell fact from fantasy. Hopefully, dispelling these four fat loss myths here will help you stay on the right track so that you can achieve the fat loss goals you desire.

3 Palate Training Tips to Help Your Kids Prevent Weight Gain!

Frances Norah Smith » 12 April 2009 » In Weight Loss » No Comments

If you thought your kids have obtained their junk food eating habits from peers, you may not be wholly true! Habits start quite early in the life of a human, and if your kid is taught the benefits of healthy eating right from infancy, they are less likely to indulge in junk food eating out of peer pressure, if at all, than otherwise! A formula which works very well in this case is palate training.

Contrary to its name, this formula is quite simple and straightforward, in that it doesn’t require any expert knowledge on your part! It was invented by two members of the Good Food Village Trust, Louise Rutten and Mitzy Wilson! Palate training is all about training the tastebuds of your kids in such a way that they start loving natural and healthy foods much more than those yummy fast foods! So let’s get right on it as to how to start training the palates of your kids!

1. Let them appreciate natural foods: Your kids would eat organic foods only when they love them! From quite an early age, you should educate your children that beets or carrots don’t taste bad! Conventional preaching doesn’t work too well in case of kids for whom, seeing is believing.

So you could go a bit further, peel off a carrot and let your kid lick it with his tongue or chop it off and ask him to put a piece on one side of his mouth and keep it there for a few moments to enjoy the taste. Such small and gradual steps would make your kid to like the taste of carrots! In fact, you can use this formula for any food you want your kids to eat!

2. Don’t encourage bad habits at home: While it is true that you don’t have absolute control over what your kid eats when he is out of home, you could still control his eating habits in a number of methods.

For example, when he goes to school, pack his lunch box with healthy fruits and vegetables. If your kid doesn’t eat it at school, make him eat the same at home. It is still possible that your kid may have a bite of pizza or hamburger at school or a sip of soft drink at a friend’s party! However, they won’t get addicted to them if you don’t allow those foods at home, since a kid needs to eat a particular food at least 14-15 for him to get addicted to it!

3. Walk the talk: It is easy to preach the benefits of healthy eating to your kids but do YOU follow your own advice? Keep in mind that kids have a tendency to emulate the adults, particularly their parents, and if they catch you enjoying a packet of chips on a lazy Saturday evening, why would they be contented with a carrot or cabbage? If you wish to inculcate good eating habits in your kids, you need to adopt them yourself first!

Does Milk Really Help With Weight Loss?

Frances Norah Smith » 28 February 2009 » In Weight Loss » No Comments

So you think that milk is good for your body? If yes then you really need to read this whole article. There are so many people who have the same believe as you, and I cannot blame anybody for this because dairy farmers are responsible for all these. They claim that milk will help strengthen your bones because of the presence of calcium in it. They also claim that milk will give you such energy boost that you will feel like a superman. Obviously, they want you to believe this way so that they can cash in on your gullibility. However, just as some other myths are doing the rounds of the weight loss industry, this is also a myth.

1. Surprisingly, the milk you purchase from your local store is not pure milk: it has been processed with the help of pasteurization, meaning that it has been boiled at a temperature of 160 centigrade and then cooled down. Milk is pasteurized in order to kill any and all the germs present in the raw milk. On the flip side, pasteurization not only kills the germs, but also the beneficial nutrients present in it. Enzymes such as lipase and phosphates can be a lot beneficial to your body, but you wont enjoy its benefit in the pasteurized milk that you purchase from your local shop.

That is not however the end of the story. Pasteurization also kills antibodies such as immunoglobulin that is present in raw milk. Immunoglobulin strengthens the immune system in your body against various diseases. From my point of view, milk will not benefit you, at least not the one that comes in sealed packets.

After pasteurization is completed, the milk is homogenized to maintain the cream at the bottom. Once this process is done, several synthetic vitamins are added to it in order to make it ‘nutritious’. However, remember that synthetic vitamins are not and can never be substitutes for natural vitamins. They are man-made chemicals and will have more harmful effects to your body.

2. Milk causes weight gain: Contrary to what you might think, instead of losing weight, milk will actually make you gain weight. If you are in the habit of drinking milk frequently, it is expected that you have become overweight. As you drink more and more milk, you will gain more and more weight.

3. Milk causes a host of other diseases: Besides weight gain, there are a lot of harmful side effects of drinking milk, such as arthritis, constipation, skin allergies, cancer, acne, etc.

Do you still want to drink milk? I hope not.

5 Guaranteed Tips to Weight Loss Success

Frances Norah Smith » 26 February 2009 » In Weight Loss Diet » No Comments

There are abundance of diet programs whether online or offline. Even if you were to search the World Wide Web only, you will still find a wide range of diet programs. What is more tedious is finding a diet plan that would be suited for your health, help you lose weight and not harm your body in any way. Believe me, finding the best weight loss program is like finding a pearl from the bottom of the ocean. But regardless of which diet program you chose, you will still need to follow the basics of dieting, otherwise you will never be able to lose weight. In this article, I will tell you about five basics of effective weight loss.

1. Metabolism is the key weight loss determinant: Always keep in mind that your body’s metabolic rate is what will determine how much weight you will be able to lose at a given point of time. When your metabolic rate is high, you are able to lose significant amount weight even while at rest; on the other hand, if your metabolic rate is slow, then you should find ways to increases it. One option to speed up your metabolism is to consume weight loss pills and supplements.

2. Regular exercises are a must: Regardless of how close you follow your diet, if you stay idle all day sitting on your couch and watching your favorite TV program, how can you expect to lose those unwanted belly fat? You should exercise regularly and never skip even a single workout session! If you are afraid of high intensity exercises such as cardio and resistance training, you can start with lighter aerobics. Aerobics will help you burn as much fat as cardio. If you cannot do exercises at all, regular walking alone will help you burn fat.

3. Don’t lose it too quickly: I know that you are trying to lose weight and fit yourself into one of your old jeans or bikinis as fast as you can, but you should never attempt to lose weight too fast. Ideally you should lose no more than 1 or 2 pounds per week. If you lose more than that then it can affect your health negatively. If you think you are losing weight too fast, you should immediately visit a doctor.

4. Eat low fat foods only: I know that every weight loss expert has advised you the same thing, but allow me to reiterate that you should eat only those foods that have a low fat content. Eating fatty and junk foods will make your situation worse!

5. Work harder for hereditary obesity: Some people become overweight because of hereditary issues. If your parents were overweight then it is no wonder that you won’t be any different. Also, people who suffer from hereditary obesity need to work harder than others in order to lose weight. This doesn’t mean that you cannot lose weight at all; but you shouldn’t expect yourself to become ultra slim like others.

3 Weight Loss Myths That Can Put Your Life in Jeopardy

Frances Norah Smith » 25 February 2009 » In Weight Loss Diet » No Comments

Health related articles contain lots of information when it comes to weight loss. It includes useful tips that actually work and also those that don’t. The weight loss industry is filled with myths, not to mention misleading and inaccurate information as some tend to change the facts for their own gains or partly due to the lack of knowledge. As a result, fad diets, weight loss supplements and pills that don’t work came about. In this article I will discuss three such weight loss myths.

1. Myth#1: Spot reduction of fat is possible: Not totally true. This claim is not true to a certain extent and it has been backed up by weight loss experts. Many have been mislead that if you do workouts that focus on a certain area, you can spot reduce fat.

If you do only crunches and leg lifts frequently in the hope of reducing belly fat, you will notice that instead of reducing your belly fat, you will reduce the muscle mass that resides beneath the abdomen. For this reason, your focus should not be on crunches and leg lifts alone; you should also follow a healthy diet that would speed up your metabolic rate and help you burn fat fast!

2. Myth#2: Cutting down extremely on calorie consumption decreases your body fat: This inaccurate claim has made many to go on crash diets, some even to the extent of starvation with the hope to shed the unwanted pounds. As for most, little did they know that they are actually ruining their body. The body enters the starvation mode when you fast or starve. Cutting down extremely on calorie intake makes the body go into starvation mode and this will slow down your metabolism rate. Hence in order to produce energy, the body will burn your muscles instead of your fat. On top of that, your body will absorb more calories when you resume your normal diet, resulting in weight gain.

3. Myth#3: Doing cardio exercises alone can assist in weight loss: Cardio exercises can definitely assist in weight loss however it is not the only form of exercise that is able to help you lose weight. Different form of exercises like aerobics can also have the same weight loss effects. Other exercise like weight lifting on the other hand, is a much better exercise compared to both cardio and aerobics. It assists in weight loss and also helps you gain muscles at the same time.

I hope that this article has helped you to be aware of the misleading information about weight loss.

Change Your Food Plan for Quick Weight Loss

Frances Norah Smith » 25 February 2009 » In Weight Loss Diet » No Comments

Most of the diet programs provide you restrictive meal plans that are too dull to begin with. But more importantly, these diets have certain limitations in their meals which, if not fixed, will give you exactly the opposite of what you want to achieve! In this article I will tell you about three such food repairs. These repairs won’t conflict with the usual flow of your diet program; if anything, they should make your life easier!

1. Eat raw fruits and vegetables: When it comes to weight loss, we are faced with a conflict: on one hand we are told that in order to lose weight, we need to reduce our food intake to a certain extent, but on the other hand, we cannot keep up with hunger. This conflict will prevent you from achieving your goals.

Eating raw fruits and vegetables will resolve both problems: you can eat as many raw vegetables and fruits as you want, while still keeping your calorie intake at a low level. Also, raw fruits and vegetables keep you full for a longer time since they are rich in fiber; this way, you will also eliminate hunger. This is like killing two birds with one stone!

2. Control your portion: The first baby step you need to take is to control and regulate your portions. Of course, to do that, you don’t need to keep scales with you for the purpose of weighing foods. Measuring food portion sizes won’t be a problem at home because you are free to decide how much of what you want to eat.

However, in most restaurants, you will be served large portion sizes which you simply don’t need! No doubt that often you end up overeating and increasing your waistline. To fix this, only eat as much as is required to fill your stomach; no more, and no less. Calorie counting is another method you can use to regulate your food intake, but it is a bit monotonous for many.

3. Eat smaller portions frequently: Most people are so lazy that they call it a day after having just two meals; some people do it for time constraints, while others deliberately skip meals in the hope of losing weight. You may or may not believe it, but in order to lose weight successfully, you need to eat more.

No, I don’t mean to suggest you to increase your overall food intake. Just break down your two large meals into several smaller meals, and eat each small meal every two or three hours. Frequent eating will not only keep your blood sugar levels well balanced, but also keep you energetic throughout the day! Plus, frequent eating will also increase your metabolic rate, which in turn will accelerate the weight loss process!

I Stopped Depending on Fad Diets and Used This to Lose Weight

Frances Norah Smith » 25 February 2009 » In Weight Loss Diet » No Comments

Have you ever been at a point when nothing seems to work for you? I know I was! Not too long ago, I gained a lot of weight when I was under tremendous stress. I ate a lot of food in order to get rid of stress and the result was that I became overweight. And you know what, I didn’t like my fat tummy at all. I not only hated the fact that I had a huge, protruding belly, but also that I could no longer fit myself into my favorite trousers. I was desperate to lose all that weight and become the fit person that I was.

Just like anyone else would have done. I decided to try dieting. I tried almost every diet under the sun: the South Beach, the Atkins, the calorie counting diets, NutriSystem, everything. I even wasted a lot of money on ‘pre-packaged meals’ and diet delivery plans, but nothing seemed to work! It was not that I didn’t lose weight with the help of these diet plans: I did, but these diets were way too restrictive for me and I knew that I was not going to eat boring foods like that for the rest of my life!

So here is what would happen: I would follow a diet for a four to five weeks, lose weight, get fed up with its restrictions, get back to my normal diet, and then gain back the ‘lost’ weight. Bottom line, I was getting nowhere with these diet plans!

I was aware that I had had enough of diets so I was surely not going back to them; it is of no use wasting time on something that works only for a short while and becomes ineffective after that. This time I tried something natural.

I am talking about the all natural detox diet cleanse plan. In simple words, this plan is all about eating natural fruits and vegetables and staying away from fried stuff. I thought that I had tried almost everything except this, so why not give it a shot and see if it convincing or not?

So for the subsequent two weeks I survived only on raw fruits and vegetables. For someone who eats fried and junk foods for years, going raw for days on end was difficult, but I knew I had to lose weight and become slim so that I could fit into my favorite jeans and trousers. If anyone ever told you that you cannot lose more than two pounds per week, they must be ignorant about the detox diet cleansing. With this all-natural method, I lost almost 13 pounds in just two weeks!

During the next month, I survived on a moderate version of the detox diet and lost another ten pounds. The amazing thing about this diet method was that the ‘lost weight’ never came back when I returned back to my normal eating habits.

Another good thing is that with this method, you don’t feel deprived and hungry at all. I am now always full and satiated and rarely have any urge to try junk foods. Plus I like the fact that I can fit myself into my favorite clothes!
